about

(English, Scottish Gaelic) 21st Century

A love song to the dead possessor of brown hair ringlets . . . the prince in the Oran Bagraidh. Poet Macgillivray amalgamated the lyrics from several translations of Oran Bagraidh alongside an ancient Gaelic poetic motif of the breath on a shroud shrinking. A lament and a love song in the sense of all tragic love songs being spells or wish charms - often desperate - in this piece, a love song to the death of Galloway Gaelic; the prince personified.

lyrics

Heavy on me, this one day of morning.
Heavy on me, this morning of blood.
Your brown hair ringlets,
your brown hair burning,
your brown hair ringlets cold in my blood.

Breath on your shroud, now shrinking and fading.
Birth of your youth, filling with snow.
Pass of the hosts, the waterfalls burning,
in the light of your dead eye
I see my love fill.

Where you decay, in the crypt of your grave,
your face worn away by softening soil,
I will carry your morning of blood
I will carry your morning of blood
I will carry your morning of blood
I will carry your morning, my love.

Beiridh mi do mhadainn mo ghraidh
Beiridh mi do mhadainn mo ghraidh
Beiridh mi do mhadainn mo ghraidh
Beiridh mi do mhadainn mo ghraidh
